Albert Thurgood was a footballing phenomenon and remarkable all-round athlete. He was a prolific goalscorer in an era of low scores and was versatile enough to play in any position. Thurgood won this medal for 'Putting the Shot' in the Australasian Amateur Athletic Championships at the MCG on 9 November 1893. It was a medal to add to his two VFA premiership medals for 1892 and 1893.
