Hi J, ...op shop ! ..well done. I have had very, very few Ida finds in trash and treasure situations. ...but I know that a decent number of the rarer items I have, were found by people at markets etc. ... but of course it's too late by then...and I have to pay top-dollar. The Red Witch and the other 3 books in the series do seem to be sought after and have reasonable value...but you may have worked out...those Ida paintings were previously published in Ida's own books...so using 4 and building a new story around them is kind of weird and inauthentic or something. ...but of course I am still happy her publishers did it. ...did you see the pages on this website with The Red Witch and co. ? ...did you see the slip-case ? I love it...have only seen or heard of just the one example, in two decades of collecting. ...funny thing though...I tried to put the four books, with jackets, in to the slip-case...and they didn't even come close to fitting. Maybe the slip-case was sold with the 4 books, with no jackets on.

Thank you so much for a prompt response. No there is no jacket , The book has a lot of yellowing especially around the edges, spine and some pages. I found it in an op shop and loved the paintings inside. Thanks heaps for the info and really appreciated. Kindest regards J

Hi Jacquie, Regarding the possible value of your Red Witch....very hard to say without seeing it. ...does it have a jacket ? Are the blue covers in nice condition ? ...or water-stained ? ...If you have no jacket and the covers are okay, then maybe $100 - $150 to the right buyer. There were only two editions of those books and I don't think 1st would make much difference to the value. 1st & 2nd are almost identical. If you have a jacket...could be $300, if you are lucky.

Is the picture signed ? ...as for telling if it's original...you just have to look closely. Hand painting is often easy to spot. ...many prints are made up of small dots...which can be seen with naked eye or certainly with a magnifying glass. Can you touch the surface of the picture ? That's another way to assess originals. Good luck.

I came across a painting looks like watercolor on cardboard of "Fairies Dancing in the Nasturtiums" at a charity shop - how can I tell if its an original? The colors are really just greens, yellows - nothing like the prints I saw online with browns.

DALE, Hi ...sorry I took so long. I hope you see this message. Anyway, sounds like you have bit of a treasure there. I have never seen or heard of 'Fairyland' with "an author's copy" written on it. I have seen the companion book 'Elves & Fairies', with 'With Compliments of The Editor' written on the title page...but no editor signature or name written...nor was it signed by Ida or Annie. Back to Fairyland...there are quite a few minor variations regarding numbers, signed, not signed, signed by Annie & Ida. I certainly don't think no number would effect the value negatively. The author's copy bit would trump the number. ...but of course Ida's signature is the main thing. By the way, the deluxe Fairyland didn't have a dust-cover...just a thin slip-case. I must have seen over 40 deluxe Fairylands over the years...and just 4 with slip-cases. Who gave you the copy in school ? - was it a prize ? Andrew ... [email protected]

Hi Guys - I was lucky enough to get a copy of Fairyland back when I was in high school. Mine isn't numbered, where the number should be it is written "an author's copy" it is signed. sadly doesnt have the dust cover

Hi there, I have a blank card which I've had many years. It's called "Rabbits at Table" and is an illustration by Ida of approx. 13 rabbits with their spoon at a large table and the mother rabbit is cutting up a big carrot. Any ideas where this image originated in what book form?

Hi Mrs. Ducker, thanks for getting in touch. ...but I don't think you'll like my assessment of the book value. ...so there are four in the series...three have Ida nd one has her husband. Your book 1 is probably the best, with the two colour Ida pictures. ...but as you can probably see on the website, I have bought a lot (I am up to 18 different printings, over the 4 volumes) ...and part of the reason is that they are always good prices. ...around $30. ...but $50-$60 could be worth a try, if you are selling. ...speaking of which...if you are wanting to sell...please let me know...and maybe please quote the strange, ting numbers & letters in the front and back. - one should be under 'Made in Great Britain' at the front and the other as the last 'line' on the last page of text. ...it is amazing though...these books have SO many printings and must have sold really, really well ...yet now they are fairly hard to find. One clue about how many there were...how many reprints...is that I have my 18...but have probably only seen about 3 duplicates of those 18. - meaning of course, that there are so many printings, that almost all of my copies have been different printings. Hi Penny, sorry for the delay, I hope you get to this...although were you wanting to know my opinion about prices or something ? - certainly it is great that your aunt was a subscriber to both books. ...I never even thought of that. I wonder how many names appear as subscribers to both books. Berkelouw seem to have a good reputation, although I have never seen a Fairyland sell for $6000. Close, I don't think anything north of $5000 - even with it's extra-rare original cover. ...I did see the one Elves & Fairies sell for around $10000. ...it was in excellent condition, was signed and had a really good slip-case. ...that was about 15 years ago and might have been a bit of a one-off. ...$20000 is crazy-talk. ...sorry to say. Anyway, I can't say much about value without seeing the books ...although if you have had to get them repaired, I gather they aren't quite perfect condition...so that's a little negative...even with the repairs. ...what was your aunt's name ? Hello Andrew, I have a copy of both Fairyland [#151, signed by IRO] and a copy of Elves and Fairies. My great-great-aunt [I think] was a ‘subscriber’ to both. There were only 421 of Elves and Fairies subscribed to – which makes the sale of it at $1300 rather odd, I’d have thought. I get both books regularly [every 5 years or so] restored [to repair any wear and tear] and valued at Berkelouw Books in Berrima, NSW. Last time, about 5 years ago, Fairyland was valued by Leo Berkelouw at $6000, and E&F at $4000. Neither have slip covers. He also advised that they have American clients willing to pay up to $20,000 [!!!] for Fairyland ‘if I wanted to sell’. When I said I wasn’t interested: they were a family heirloom – he was delighted that they are to stay in Australia.

Sorry to say, but nothing on the website is for sale. ...a lot of it is not even mine. ...and what is mine, I still collect pretty seriously...so I can't part with it. ...I DO have a small handful of things spare...including two of these four books - with their jackets. I think that came about because I had price-clipped copies and wanted to upgraded to un-price clipped. ...but I don't think they are in the same condition as the ones in the photos. Would you be interested in two of them ? Or other Ida items ? ...let me know and perhaps send your email address, so we can communicate directly. I could send photos of the books...if you like. Hi Benjamin Cole, #37 is very early. Easily the lowest number I have heard of. ...wouldn't that make it a subscriber copy ? ...someone who's name is in the back ? As for where to sell and for how much. Auction-houses take way too much. 20% from seller and 20% from buyer. Much the same for book-dealers or more...for their mark-up. Ebay probably best. But impossible to say without seeing the book. Certainly Fairyland should always be north of $1000 ...some fetch $3000-$5000 ...it depends on so many things. ...like the right buyer in the right mood. Let me know how you go. Regards Andrew

Hi Peta Sleeman, good to know you have a copy of Fairyland in any condition. ...as for the markings. Sounds like foxing. I don't know a great deal about antique books in general...but I am pretty sure it's caused by substances IN the original paper. Iron especially. It happens to lots of books and because it is fairly universal and doesn't actually ruin a book...I try to just accept and then ignore it. As for stopping it. I don't know...beyond putting acid-free paper between every page...which isn't very practical. ...good luck...

Is there an inscription or letter from the Ramsay family ? ...and interesting to know you have #604 ...which makes my 600 deluxe theory look shakey ...except that maybe the Ramsay's got Ida to sign 600-610 for friends and family ...and THEN they stopped the numbered deluxe. ...and I don't know about the Queen...but I am sure it would have been deluxe. ...would be interesting to know if she actually READ it ...or if it just went straight to the library. I know that at one point, Ida got a small medal from the Queen ... like birthday honors. ...but sent by mail I gather and not especially prestigious. ...glad you like the website. Regards Andrew

Maybe Gumtree...but I have little experience of Gumtree. As for value...they are certainly 'rare'. I have seen only 3 or 4 complete envelopes (in varying condition)...but I don't think they are especially sought-after by anyone. I think I only paid $20 or $30 for a couple. One was from a book-shop. ...I have seen the 5 A4 posters sold as a set, without the rest of the items. ...again, not for much. Different printings often had slightly different envelopes (mainly in the lists on the reverse) - even for same series. Recently I am restoring this book, the one I got here has lost the end sheets, and the book structure is not like normal book structure, the way the spine connected to the text block is quite different to the books I have restored. I am thinking is that possible that you can take picture of the similar edition you have got, I may get some ideas from you. Especially the end sheets section, and the spine part. Hi Tina, thanks for getting in touch...but I don't think I'll have any great news for you. My guess of price would only be $30 - $50. However ...it is 'rare' ...in my 20 years I have only seen 3 or 4 green and maybe 2 brown Coles. ...sadly it doesn't seem to translate to value in this case. ...but you could try of course. Start it at $100 on eBay or something. I would have suggested you contact the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum...as they have a Melba collection ...but of all things, I gave them a spare green Coles a couple of years ago, along with one or two others. They had an exhibition about the gift book and borrowed my copies. Regards Andrew

This is the dark blue cover, not the light blue. The book was a gift to our family from the Ramsay family themselves. The cover itself is slightly faded but the pages are immaculate (there is no slip-case). I recently read an article published by the ABC News (Australia - OCT 2018) which suggested that Fairlyland was presented to Queens Elizabeth when she was an infant (then Princess) - I wonder if this was a numbered deluxe edition - would be fascinating to know.

Hi I have a pen and ink decorated wooden box and I believe it may be by Ida. There is a name to the bottom left S.Seton Chisholm 1930, I am thinking this is maybe the name of the recipient and Chisholm being in Australia. The illustration is wonderful and covers all sides and top there are rabbits and flora on the sides and the top has a fairy holding hands with a boy dressed as a rabbit and a girl piper leaning against a tree. The edge of the box has a red and gold painted boarder with small gold spots dotted along the deep red edge. I would like to send photographs to see what you think. Thanks Gee

Hi Sandy, Fairyland is my favorite Ida book...so that's a good start. Deluxe are certainly rare and desirable. You may have seen on my website that I am 99% sure there were probably only 600 published, not 1000 ...because they most likely didn't sell, perhaps due to a huge price for the time. ...so they are probably much rarer than most people think. ...almost twice as rare. Hard to say value, without seeing your copy...but very few are perfect. They normal seem to go for $1000 to $2000 when a little worn. Book dealers seem to either pay bottom-dollar to buy or take about 40% commission. I'd try it on ebay if I were you. Make sure you offer to post over-seas...maybe start at $1500. ...and no buy-it-now to start with. If it doesn't sell at $1500 either lower price or add 'make an offer' or 'buy it now' as time goes by. Good luck. ...but you know, I am not a price expert...might be ways to get much more money if you keep asking around. Regards Andrew

I have a signed copy of Fairyland, number 557, by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. It is the Edition-de-Luxe published August 23rd, 1926 by Ramsay Publishing Pty. Ltd, Melbourne. The cover has some marks on it but is intact. The internal condition is very good with tissue paper over some illustrations. Would you you have any idea as to the books worth and the best way to go about selling it? Sandy

oh well, sorry it's so well read. ...would have been nice to score a few thousand dollars out of the blue. By the way, did you know Fairyland was reprinted again, only about 2 years ago ? Smaller size, but very nice still. I would love to know if it sold well. Small point...don't know if I mention on the website ...but either USA or UK or maybe both actually have LARGER reproductions of the illustrations. Larger than in the deluxe. So maybe you should keep your worn-out copy and perhaps enhance it, by colouring-in the black and white illustrations ???!!!

Will depend greatly on condition. ...I have photos of all three editions on this website, including your 1931 UK type. Except my photos have the dust-wrapper ON. ...with a fairy on a butterfly. I Have a copy of Fairyland similar to the one shown at the beginning of this web page except that it has a motiff of an elf and rabbit holding hands and dancing. I cannot find any edition numbers but published in GB in 1931. Can you tell me what this book might be worth. If is in fair condition.

Hi John and Sue, thanks for getting in touch. ...and sorry for the delay, I had to go in to the vault and do a little research. ...I understand exactly what you are saying. First of all, my understanding is that there was the deluxe 1st edition, then the 1st trade edition and you have the 1925 2nd edition. So it states the year it was re-printed - 1925...but goes back and mentions that it was first published in 1920. As for your inscription...my guess would be that it was made by a dealer of flippant owner...(who'd lost their pencil)...and who saw "1920" mentioned and went with it, when they made their note. The date must be just a record of the printing year ...and not a reference to the year the inscription was done in. ...if it were a Dr. Who book, things might be quite different. HOWEVER ...I finally hit information pay-dirt from this web-site. You have opened my eyes to a nice little error somewhere, with the books. ...you see the deluxe and the first trade edition BOTH have 1921 as the year they were published - NOT 1920. So, that is interesting. In had never noticed before. - You might be curious, I have a further edition of 'The Enchanted Forest'...eleven years later: 1936. Yet...with 11 years to notice the date error, the publishing details read: "First published, September, 1920 Reprinted in 1925 and 1936. Hope that helps. ...if you don't like the inscription...can I suggest lots of liquid-paper and a hair-dryer ??? Regards

Hi, I have a copy of The Enchanted Forest and I am very confused as to its Published date. On the Title page it has A& C Clack 1925 - making it a 3rd print. On the rear of the title page it has first published 1920 ? But strangest of all on the front end paper it has written in pen a name and the date 1920 ? Impossible to be dated 1920 IF THE book was not published until 1925 - any thoughts as to if this is an error or do I own a 1st 2nd or 3rd print ??

Are you interested in knowing value or rarity ? ...or just sharing that you own a little treasure ? ...In my experience, 'The Naughty Baby Monkey' is the hardest to find, of all six Willie Winkie Zoo books. I have only seen three copies on the market in the past 20 years. If yours is in nice enough condition, like the one photographed on the website, then it could be worth $400 - $500 if you find the right person to sell to. You probably read that on my 'wanted' list, there is smaller, shorter version of Baby Monkey listed ...it was given the number '305' ...but was said to have been "withdrawn" ...because the content was NQR. ...it's a big curiosity to me...because the snippets of history I have read about it, make it appear that it most likely WAS published in reader form...then recalled or something. So MAYBE there are a couple of reader copies still out there somewhere...saved from being pulped or something. It's a bit of a holy-grail for me. ...but great that the 'deluxe' survives and you certainly have a very special book. ...who is the dedication from in your copy ? ...I have never seen or heard of a copy of any of the 6 deluxe books, or 3 readers being signed by Ida or A.R. Hi Glenda, ...do you have the light-blue copy ? ...without a signature ? As I mention, they must be rarer than the proper signed deluxe ones...but aren't as desirable, because of the cheaper binding. ...as for where to sell...Auction houses take 20% from you and 20% from the buyer ...and an antiquarian book-seller would probably want about the same. ...but eBay doesn't charge too much and you are in control. If I was you, I'd list it on eBay ...make it a world-wide auction and start it at the minimum price you would accept... ...sorry I don't have any super idea's about how to sell. Regards Andrew

Hi Erin, Sorry for the delay, I was off with the fairies. So you have the English 1931 edition of Fairyland - WITH ...you mean, the dust-wrapper ?? That is great...the wrapper is very rare, in any condition. ....as for 'contact' - NO !!! ...there is special material made, for jackets - perfect or damaged ones. It's like a wallet sort of. Paper on the back and clear on the front. You lay the jacket on the paper, then fold to correct size, then peel off a sticky area...like on envelopes and stick the paper and clear together. Then use scissors to trim edge of protection. So jacket is encased, but nothing has been attached to it. I use it all the time and plan to have it on every jacket I own...eventually. I bought mine from an antiquarian book-dealer several meters. ...you could try that. - a whole roll can be hundreds of dollars I think. Or if you are in Victoria, maybe we could have a try together and I'd get to see the book. ...if there are tears, don't use sticky tape. There is acid-free tape available...that is supposed to be almost invisible. I have some of that too. Or a place called 'Archival Survival' are first class...but again...you'd probably have to buy a whole roll ! The spotting or foxing is irreversible I think. Got to keep the book in a dry place. Hi there, I have a copy of Fairyland printed in 1931. The slipcover is damaged, I was just trying to work out whether I should cover it with a layer of contact. The pages are quite spotty with age, but most of the colour pictures look perfect. I’m unsure of what to do to preserve the book. I don’t want to destroy any part of it, but would love to stop it degrading further. Have you any tips?

Hi Nicole...you say you have 'Elves & Fairies...but happened to contact me on the 'Fairyland' page ? 'Elves & Fairies' weren't ever numbered (although 1500 are said to have been published) and only a few ...maybe one in 15 or 20 were signed. ...if you have Fairyland...then they were meant to be signed and especially numbered. the light-blue were mostly numbered 600 - 1000 ...but never signed. ...and the dark blue were mostly signed and numbered 1 - 600 ...although there are lots of little exceptions. ...but if it's Elves & Fairies you have...that's how it's meant to be, more or less. ...as for value...sorry to say, last one I saw sold was just over a week ago at Mossgreen in Melbourne and 'only' sold for $1300 (plus 20% commission)

Lots of variables. ...I see people trying to to get over $500 for them...and yet I have bought plenty on eBay for under $100. ...Is yours a 1st edition ? ...same as the photo on the page you sent me the question from ? Just a foot-note: not sure if you saw on this website that there were also the 3 titles (including your two), that went on to become children's school readers. - and they were reproduced (and the design and some details altered), for many years and LOTS of printings. Here's what I sort of think is interesting. I've been looking hard for all the different ones for nearly 20 years and have found just over 20 combined of the three titles, BUT, almost every 'new' one that turns up on the market, IS one I haven't seen before. So I've seen and bought about 20 ...and rejected only around 5, which were duplicates. MEANING...that there were lots and lots of re-prints...and it's likely to be 30-40 in total. - There is a great book that lists many of the variants...and I don't have everything on the list, just for starters. Anyway, don't get me started.....

Baby Lions and Peters Peach are next and then the other two harder again. If they are in nice condition...you could hopefully get $200+ each...maybe not more than $300. Inscriptions shouldn't matter. That's about all I know. But ask anything else you want. ...maybe both starting at $400 on eBay for a week...see if anyone bites

Hi Pam, - yes, Annie hand-wrote the text for both books. Beautiful writing for a young girl. Annie was just as much of a genius as Ida was in my opinion. Her stories and especially her rhymes are simply wonderful. I don't have a copy of 'Mollie's Bunyip' for sale, (although I have a number of other good Ida items I am ready to sell.) ...however, you can get a copy of 'Mollie's Bunyip' from Douglas Stewart Fine Books in Armadale, Victoria. Hi John, ...you must have the light-blue Fairyland, without the tissue-papers ? I have written about it on the site...but it seems that the deluxe Fairyland must not have sold very well, so they stopped with the signed ones, with tissue-papers etc and the really deluxe binding...and bound up the remaining pages and sold the books off relatively cheaply. - so the books include the signed and numbered page...but it no longer applied. - although someone seemed to number most of them, although not Ida from what I can tell. They are from about number 600 to 1000. - it's quite interesting to know that a special book like the signed one must appear to most people to have been published as 1000 copies...but in fact the number is almost half that, at 600. ...and then, your one, I assume your one, ends up actually being RARER than the signed one. - with 400 or less made. - and sorry, I don't know anything about Ramsay publishing...except that they produced a beautiful book in Fairyland. - It's my favorite Ida book. Regarding the hand-writing, the book was definitely hand-written by Ida's sister, Annie Rentoul. However, there was a real 'Mollie', who was a friend of the family - so there must be a fairly good chance that the real Mollie could have dedicated a copy to her cousin (Beth). As for the hand-writing being similar...it seems students were all well-drilled in learning the same, neat, writing style. Anyway, I'd love to see some photos. [email protected] Regards Andrew
