I agree with John Bond about the c1855 date for the dress and grooming style of the sitter and note also that the case is too large for the ambrotype preserver, which therefore incorrectly sits loose in the case; therefore case is from a later time. The 1882-'84 date (for Bell's portrait rooms at 52 Bourke St East) may well be correct for the case, but not for the ambrotype, IMHO
Wonder if this image is not rather older than the designated date, since the flowing hair, fringe beard and prominent bowtie belong to the period 1840-60. At a guess ? About 1855, not much later. Trust this helps, JB

Hi Maryann That is very interesting information. We had no idea of the identity of these portraits, so thank you for passing this on. It will be interesting to do further research on him. We had tentatively dated the photo of the blind man around 1859, but based on your information it seems more likely to be post-1865. Many thanks
Found thru picture trail Jeronimo in Camp Douglas Chicago IL after Civil War. Had a before picture of him with uniform then had an after picture totally bones due to starvation. I am thinking his picture which depicts him being blind maybe after this prison time. In which he gained weight. All prisoners of War in Camp Douglas 1862-1865 are buried in Oakwood cemetery in IL. For anyone needing family info
I just now happened upon your nice web site. Did you attend the Society's meeting in NYC last fall? We purchased a very nice Kilburn there, and the lady in it closely resembles this one.
