I agree with John Bond about the c1855 date for the dress and grooming style of the sitter and note also that the case is too large for the ambrotype preserver, which therefore incorrectly sits loose in the case; therefore case is from a later time. The 1882-'84 date (for Bell's portrait rooms at 52 Bourke St East) may well be correct for the case, but not for the ambrotype, IMHO

Wonder if this image is not rather older than the designated date, since the flowing hair, fringe beard and prominent bowtie belong to the period 1840-60. At a guess ? About 1855, not much later. Trust this helps, JB
